DESCRIPTION:UMF Professor of Political Science and Pre-Law Adviser Dr. Jim Melcher will present his 20th Annual Supreme Court Preview and Review in UMF’s Lincoln Auditorium on Wednesday\, October 14 from 12:30-1:45. \nProfessor Melcher will discuss at least 5 cases and decisions from the past Supreme Court term\, and at least 5 cases from the upcoming term. \nCases from the upcoming term on Professor Melcher’s docket include Viramontes v. Cook County (firearms regulation)\, Republican National Committee v. Mi Familia Vota (voter registration) and St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy (Free Exercise Clause vs. state regulations) Cases from the past term will include West Virginia v. B. P. J.\,(trans student participation in school sports) Trump v. V.O.S. Selections (tariffs) \, and Trump v. Barbara (birthright citizenship). Professor Melcher will reserve time for your questions. \nThe event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the UMF Provost’s Office\, UMF Political Science\, and UMF Pre-Law.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Maine at Farmington is excited to present screenwriter and filmmaker Samuel Dunning as the second reader of the 2026 Fall semester of its Visiting Writers series. \nAn award winning filmmaker and actor\, Dunning’s latest film “Canoe Dig It?” (2025)\, which he wrote\, directed\, and starred in\, premiered at the highly acclaimed Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose\, Calif.\, and continues a very successful festival run. Canoe Dig It? is a mockumentary that offers a comical glimpse into the world of Freestyle Canoeing following the country’s top canoeists as they travel to Northern Maine to compete for the title “Top Paddler.” \nDunning’s film will screen at 7 p.m.\, Thursday\, Oct. 15\, in the Emery Community Arts Center performance space. There will be a Q&A with Dunning after the screening of his film. This screening is free and open to the public.
