SUMMARY:'The science of when science doesn’t matter—and what we can do about it' - John.Hagan
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Auditorium\, 12:30-2 PM\, Fri\, March 6 \nJohn’s description of his talk: \n“Scientists think of science as being the source of truth. But statistical significance is not the same as social significance. Society has to assign value to something before science can be put to use. Sometimes\, the science we produce is simply irrelevant to what society values. In some cases\, more science can make problems even worse. A growing body of social psychology literature in the last decade helps explain why we all react to science differently. In this talk\, John Hagan describes why society reacts so differently to the same set of facts\, and what we can do to overcome this problem.” \nDr. John Hagan is the founder\, President\, and CEO of Our Climate Common\, a non-profit organization focused on building bridges across cultural and political divides to address climate change. An ecologist with a Ph.D.\, Hagan focuses on practical\, science-based solutions.

SUMMARY:ArtsFarmington presents “Ain’t I a Woman!”
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 11\, at 7 p.m. in the UMF Emery Community Arts Center\, ArtsFarmington is pleased to present: Ain’t I a Woman! A celebration of the life and times of four powerful African American women: renowned novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston\, ex-slave and fiery abolitionist Sojourner Truth\, exuberant folk artist Clementine Hunter\, and fervent civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. \nThe musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals and blues of the Deep South\, the urban vitality of the Jazz Age\, and contemporary concert music by African Americans. Ain’t I a Woman! is a joyful exploration of the trials and triumphs of four passionate and accomplished women. \nThe Core Ensemble is represented by Mikael Darmanie on piano and the African American Women are played by Tiffany Terrell. Ms. Terrell was the actress who portrayed three other notable African American women in “Unbought” with the Core Ensemble here last year. This year’s program takes its title from an expression by Sojourner Truth. \nThe suggested adult ticket price is $20\, more if you can\, less if you can’t; all welcome\, no one turned away. UMF students are FREE. All youth 18 and under are also FREE though our Arts Inspire Youth program. Tickets at the door or at artsfarmington.org.
