Biography

Dr. Tuttle is a petrologist (i.e., geologist specializing in rocks) who studies the pressure-temperature history of metamorphic rocks as a means for examining Earth’s tectonic development. His present research efforts are largely focused on the spectacular metamorphic (and igneous) rocks of western Maine with the research goal of using these rock types to constraint the tectonic development of northern New England. Dr. Tuttle’s teaching activities at UMF include mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and introductory geology. A key goal of Dr. Tuttle’s teaching efforts is to demonstrate the infinite ways in which Earth resources (i.e., minerals and rocks) are used by humans in Maine and everywhere to power society and to improve our standard of living. In his spare time, Dr Tuttle enjoys hiking (commonly with the goal of finding cool rocks) and growing flowers.
