Biography

Sarah A. Sloane is an avian behavioral ecologist specializing in the evolution of complex social systems, primarily cooperative breeding systems. Her current research focuses on the complex social system of the American Bushtit (Psaltriparus minimus) in Portland, Oregon. This year marks the 39th year Sarah has been studying bushtits, beginning in 1986 in southwestern Arizona for 25 years, with a brief foray into Washington State before migrating to Portland, Oregon in 2016. At UMF, Sarah greatly enjoys teaching behavioral ecology at all levels and has a special interest in mentoring undergraduate students by including them in her own research as well as guiding them in their own. Outside of work she enjoys hiking, making music, painting, and spending time with her adorable grandson.
