UMF presents “Music and Stories: Piano Works that Tell Their Own Tales,” Oct. 28 & 29
FARMINGTON, ME (October 15, 2025)—The University of Maine at Farmington presents “Music and Stories,” a piano performance by Steven Pane, pianist and UMF professor of music, highlighting the expressive and narrative power of instrumental music. Performances will take place in Nordica Auditorium, Merrill Hall, on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 12:30 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public.
The program draws inspiration from the UMF course Music and Stories, co-taught this semester by professors Pane and Lewis Robinson. The course examines the many ways narrative and music intersect—how composers shape character, contrast, and emotion through sound; and how stories in literature and other arts similarly convey human experience through structure, pacing and tone.
Program:
Robert Schumann — “Novellette in E major”
Charles Ives — “The Alcotts” from “Concord Sonata”
Missy Mazzoli — ”Isabelle Eberhardt Dreams of Pianos” (for piano and electronics)
Arvo Pärt — “For Alina”
Frédéric Chopin — “Ballade No. 4 in F minor”
Music and Stories offers listeners an opportunity to experience the piano as a medium of imagination and drama—where melody, harmony and rhythm become the language of storytelling. This event is sponsored by the UMF Division of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
