Internships

Experience that Matters

The University of Maine at Farmington offers a wide range of real-world, hands-on learning opportunities designed to help you connect your classroom education with your future career. Many of our academic programs require students to complete an internship or a similar experience — such as a teaching practicum, student teaching placement, or paid research project.

These opportunities aren’t just add-ons — they’re essential steps toward building confidence, gaining practical skills, and preparing for life after college.

Variety of Internship Options

  • For Credit or Non-Credit: Many majors require at least one internship for credit, but you can also do additional experiences just to gain professional experience before graduation.

  • Any Season: Internships are available any time of year, depending on your schedule and your field (e.g., winter internships in the ski industry or summer internships at camps).

  • Compensated or Volunteer: Some internships offer full or partial pay; others, like non-profits, may be unpaid. Unpaid or low-paid internships may be supported through additional awards and financial aid.

Funding Your Internship

Worried about the cost of a summer internship? UMF is here to help. Through the Internship Fellows Program, you could receive up to $3,000 to support an unpaid, low-paying, or high-cost summer internship opportunity. Additionally, if you complete the online Internship Seminar in the spring, you’ll earn a $250 stipend to help cover the cost of professional clothing or equipment needed for your role.

With support from UMF, you can grow your skills, build your professional network, and turn your education into meaningful experience — without financial barriers holding you back.
