Teacher Certification Pathways for College Graduates

Maine’s Endorsement Eligibility Pathway 2 to teacher certification is available to those who have already completed their undergraduate degrees in any major.  If you have not yet completed your bachelor’s degree, you can do so through UMF’s Degree Completion Program Teacher Certification Pathways. Schedule a virtual or in-person meeting to learn more.

Step 1: Submit Transcripts

Submit all official transcripts from every college you attended to the Maine Department of Education for transcript analysis. This process involves creating an account, applying for certification, paying a fee, completing a background check, and following Pathway 2 directions. The analysis shows what requirements remain and whether you qualify for conditional certification. Tip: Conditional certification lasts 3 years and can’t be renewed, so apply strategically.

Step 2: Complete Coursework

Complete any required courses for your certification area using UMF’s worksheets to track progress. Options include Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle & Secondary (with various subject endorsements), Special Education, and areas like Art, Music, PE, and World Languages. Courses can be taken online through UMF or at other University of Maine campuses. Some pathways also offer the option to earn a master’s degree.

Step 3: Earn good grades in required courses or take test

Earn a 3.0 grade point average in the courses required for certification or pass the Maine Basic Skills Test (Praxis) or submit a portfolio demonstrating competency in Maine’s Initial Teacher Standards. To calculate your GPA, enter the course grades and total number of credits for your required certification classes here: GPA Calculator

Step 4: Apply for Conditional Certification

Once you’ve completed the coursework and/or met testing requirements, apply for Conditional Certification through the Maine Department of Education.

It’s best to apply after securing a teaching position, so your conditional certificate doesn’t expire before you complete the next step.

Step 5: Teach Successfully for One Year

Teach for one full school year under a conditional certificate in the endorsement area and grade level.

The Maine DoE may require participation in a mentoring program during this year. Successful completion will bring you closer to earning full teacher certification.
