The UMF Counseling 3+2 — Psychology program lets you earn a B.A. in Psychology and an M.S. in Counseling in just five years, one year faster than traditional programs. This accelerated pathway prepares you for a career helping individuals, families, and groups navigate mental health challenges, life transitions, and other personal difficulties while meeting Maine’s growing need for skilled counselors.

Through the NEBHE Tuition Break program, students from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont receive a $5,670 tuition discount on all UMF degree programs.

Fast-Track Your Future: How the Counseling 3+2 Program Works”

The UMF Counseling 3+2 program lets you complete a B.A. in Psychology in three years while gaining hands-on experience through counseling courses, seminars, mentorship, and fieldwork. You’ll also earn the MHRT/C certification, providing practical work experience as you prepare for graduate study.

In your third year, a streamlined application process can help you gain early acceptance to USM’s M.S. in Counseling program, with concentrations in Clinical Mental Health or School Counseling. Mental Health Counseling leads to licensure, while School Counseling leads to certification with optional licensure coursework after graduation. Admission to USM is not guaranteed, and graduate school there is optional.

It offers students across Maine and beyond the training and experience necessary to deliver a variety of counseling services. A special focus on creative arts allows our graduates to work with the unique needs of individuals for whom traditional talk therapy is inappropriate, such as those with dementia and autism.
