The International and Global Studies major at UMF offers a flexible mix of cross-listed courses in subjects like anthropology, business, languages, economics, education, history, political science, and more. Students can combine on-campus learning with travel courses and study-abroad experiences, gaining a rich, multidisciplinary perspective on global issues.
This program deepens understanding of the world’s diverse socio-cultural, economic, and political systems while examining both historical and current global challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers in fields such as international business, global health, education, immigration services, human rights, foreign service, and work with NGOs or aid organizations.

About this Program:
The core of the major is a program of cross-listed courses that may be taken in combination at UMF, through travel courses, and during study abroad, in areas such such as: anthropology, business, Chinese, economics, education, French, geography, history, Japanese, political science, religion and Spanish.
The UMF International and Global Studies program provides you with greater knowledge and appreciation of the world’s diverse socio-cultural, economic, and political systems while exploring critical historical and contemporary issues that span the globe.
It helps broaden your potential career options, including careers in areas such as: international business & tourism, global health, international development, ESL and international education, immigration and refugee services, international law, human rights & conflict resolution, government and foreign service, non-governmental & aid agencies.
You will get to choose interesting classes specifically tailored to this program, such as:

- Explorations Abroad

- Asia: Peoples and Environments

You will also take courses in the Arts, Humanities, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.
Program Requirements
UMF offers affordable, short-term travel courses typically offered over the winter semester break and during May Term that can count toward your major. Faculty-guided travel experiences have taken students to:

The International and Global Studies program also provides you with weekend trips to global cities and international destinations in its new Global Explorations program. Students have gone to Quebec City to international-themed performances at Portland Stage, and other quick excursions.
UMF also hosts a number of on-campus international conferences, celebrations and experiences:

Farmington students who are eligible can also join the honor society for international studies, Sigma Iota Rho, an organization that promotes and rewards scholarship and service among students and practitioners of international studies, international affairs, and global studies.
