Liberal Arts Undeclared

Discover Your Path with UMF’s Liberal Arts Undeclared Program

Unsure what to choose for a major? Not a problem. At Farmington, you have up to two full years to explore before needing to decide on a major. And to help you decide, we have a special program, Liberal Arts Undeclared, that’s designed to let you discover where your interests and passions lie — all to ultimately help you choose a major that’s right for you.

Welcome to the first step in finding the best major for you!

Here are some of the reasons why our unique program is so successful:

    • Students can enroll in introductory courses (we call them exploratory courses) in any major that UMF offers. (For a list of majors and potential exploratory courses for each, visit the Majors & Programs page.).
    • Students can choose several classes designed to help with the exploratory process.
    • Each student is assigned to one of our caring and knowledgeable advisors who are chosen specifically to work with students who are undecided on a major.
    • Students have up to two full years to explore before needing to decide upon a major.
    • Students can use the Puzzled Workbook which includes self assessments for personality type, work values, skills and interest matcher.

.it was the best thing I could have done. This program has allowed me to explore different majors. My advisor is also so helpful and awesome! I have had such a positive experience that I would recommend it to any student!”

A Guided, Flexible Path to Choosing Your Major

Our Undeclared Program is the ideal way to explore options if you’re not quite ready to declare a major at Farmington. Our advising and career team is there to help you in making a decision compatible with both your passions and career goals

Course schedules are created individually and are tailored for each student, allowing students to fulfill general education requirements while exploring interests.

How many students declare a major in their first year?

Approximately 30% of the Undeclared students declare a major within their first year. Of those who persist in the program, approximately 80% declare before their fourth semester.

Do students graduate on time?

Yes, most students graduate in 4 years as long as they work closely with their advisor, receive passing grades, and declare a major within 2 years. There are some exceptions. Our retention rate is the same or better than the average retention rate at UMF.

Will I be an exception if I am an Undeclared student?

No. The Undeclared Program is one of the larger groups of students at Farmington. There are also several students who begin college with a declared major but change that major as they progress through college. Some of these students will change to Undeclared (if they are early in their college career) to work with an advisor to find the best major fit for them.
