Pre-Law

Major in Anything. Advocate for Everything

At UMF, Pre-Law lets you major in anything you love while building the skills to stand up, speak out, and make a difference in the world.

Law schools have always valued a strong liberal arts education because it offers a broad exposure to many different subjects. This kind of well-rounded learning helps you develop critical thinking and writing skills—exactly what you need to succeed in law.

At the University of Maine at Farmington, you get this wide-ranging undergraduate experience that law schools love. UMF’s focus on a diverse education prepares you not just to get into law school, but to stand out once you’re there.

Save more than $5,500 per year in tuition.

Through the NEBHE Tuition Break program, students from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont receive a $5,670 tuition discount on all UMF degree programs.

Annual U.S. Constitution Day Presentation

Every October for U.S. Constitution Day, UMF Professor James Melcher hosts a popular Supreme Court Preview and Review, offering engaging analysis of upcoming cases. Political Science and Pre-Law students especially look forward to this fall semester highlight.

Powered by Teamwork. Driven by Inspiration

If you’re aiming for a career in law, you’ll have two dedicated advisors: one from your major and another focused specifically on your law interests. They take the time to understand your goals and help you uncover your strengths, guiding you in selecting courses that emphasize legal and Constitutional issues, critical thinking, and writing.

Your advisors will also support you through the law school application process, including LSAT preparation and exploring different legal career paths. The Pre-Law program hosts regular gatherings for students across majors, featuring guest speakers, advice on law school options, and strategies to help you succeed in the LSAT and application process.

UMF: Where Going the Extra Mile Is Just the Start

Your Pre-Law advising team at UMF actively helps students find valuable internships, including opportunities like the prestigious Maine Public Policy Scholar program. This program supports year-long research projects where students intern with the State of Maine government and present their findings to the Governor. Advisors have also helped students secure internships in Washington, D.C., often working with members of congressional delegations.

Beyond internships, Pre-Law advisors connect you with UMF alums in the legal field, organize field trips, coordinate job shadowing with practicing attorneys, and arrange visits from law school representatives. They also support memberships in law organizations, attendance at legal conferences, and workshops, providing a range of opportunities to deepen your experience and build your professional network.
