Pathway to the Medical Professions
Your Fast Track from Classroom to White Coat
You’ll master the must-have sciences—bio, chem, physics, biochem—while adding cool extras like genetics and anatomy. Pair it with a major you love (most choose Biology) and get double the support from your faculty advisor and a dedicated pre-health advisor. Along the way, you can score hands-on experience at hospitals, labs, animal clinics, and research centers. UMF grads don’t just dream big—they land spots in top professional schools, with exclusive perks like the Tufts Maine Track Early Assurance Program.

UMF partners with Tufts School of Medicine, Maine Medical Center, and Logan University to offer unique health pathways. Through the Tufts Maine Track Program, students train partly in Boston and mainly in Maine, focusing on rural medicine. UMF students in good standing can apply early for assured admission to Tufts Medical School, bypassing much of the typical MCAT stress. Additionally, UMF has a 3+3 Chiropractic program with Logan University, providing a faster, affordable path to becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic.
UMF also partners with top research institutions like the Jackson Laboratory and the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, offering students hands-on training and paid internships in biomedical research. UMF also prepares students for key entrance exams—like the MCAT, PCAT, GRE, and OAT—by combining a strong liberal arts foundation with advanced science and math courses, helping you build the skills you need to succeed in health careers.
UMF Pre-Professional Health students have collaborated with UMF faculty on a number of research projects such as: sociobiology, endocrinology, genetic barcoding, medicinal chemistry, environmental monitoring and organic synthesis.
And they’ve participated in research projects off-campus at: Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, Maine Medical Center Research Lab, Mt. Desert Island’s Jackson’s Lab, the University of Michigan, the Maine Department of Marine Research and more.
The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), works with specific professional schools to provide loans for Maine residents:
Doctors for Maine’s Future: Scholarships to attend Tufts’ Maine Track or the University of New England for medical doctors (50% of tuition or $25K)
Maine Health Professions Loan program: For Maine students going to medical, dental or veterinary school. Need based, low interest.
