Support for Students with Disabilities at the UMF Learning Access Center

At the University of Maine at Farmington, we’re dedicated to helping every student succeed—no matter their abilities. The Learning Access Center (LAC), located in Franklin Hall, 1st Floor, Room 103, ensures that all students, including those with disabilities, have equal access to UMF’s academic programs and campus life.

We offer accommodations and support to make sure you have full access to your classes, activities, and everything else UMF has to offer. It’s completely your choice whether you use these services—but they’re here if you need them.

Office Hours:

  • Monday–Thursday: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Friday Drop-In (No Appointment Needed): 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Documentation & Confidentiality

When a disability isn’t visibly apparent, current documentation is required. This must include a detailed description of the disability, related needs, and recommendations for accommodations. All documentation is confidential and will only be released with the student’s written consent. It’s not part of the student’s permanent record.

Accommodation Request Process

Students can request academic or housing accommodations through the Learning Access Center (LAC) in Franklin Hall 103 using the Accommodate system via myCampus.

  • Step 1: Log into Accommodate.

  • Step 2: Submit documentation from a qualified professional (e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist, healthcare provider). High school IEPs or 504 Plans can help.

  • Step 3: Schedule and attend an appointment to discuss past supports and current needs.

  • Step 4: Accommodation letters are sent to instructors and students via Accommodate—students must review and sign them.

  • Step 5: Students must request a new letter each semester. Accommodations are not retroactive, so early submission is key.

If disagreements arise, students may contact the UMaine System Equal Opportunity Officer or file a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights.

Documentation Guidelines

To receive services, students must provide documentation of a disability as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA. Documentation must:

  • Confirm a current, significant impact on major life activities

  • Be from a qualified professional (e.g., licensed psychologist, LD specialist)

  • Be current (within 3 years)

  • Include diagnosis, educational impact, and suggested accommodations

Accommodations are designed to ensure equal access—not to provide personal care or guarantee outcomes.

Housing Accommodations

Students may request housing-related accommodations such as:

  • Medical singles

  • Emotional support animals

  • Accessible rooms and facilities (e.g., barrier-free halls, Braille signage, accessible parking)

  • Dietary needs

All housing accommodation requests should also be made through Accommodate. Contact the Learning Access Center if you’d like to discuss your needs before submitting.
