Digital Accessibility
In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) updated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), requiring public universities to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards by April 24, 2026. These standards apply to all digital content, including websites, apps, and shared materials.
UMF is committed to ensuring individuals with disabilities have full and equitable equal access to programs, services, and activities, including reasonable accommodations. Faculty and staff can find more resources about Accessibility and Title II Compliance at UMF LibGuide.
Meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards involves designing content that is usable by everyone. Examples include:
- Alternative text for images
- Accurate captions and transcripts for video and audio materials
- Using accessible document formats instead of scanned PDFs to support assistive technologies
- Structuring content with clear headings and readable layouts to improve navigation
Note: Compliance with Title II does not replace the need for individualized accommodations. Students should continue to work with Disability Services for specific support.
