Alumni Scholarships at UMF
UMF alumni scholarships turn gratitude into opportunity by supporting current students’ academic journeys. Funded by the generosity of graduates who believe in giving back, these scholarships help reduce financial barriers, reward achievement, and strengthen the enduring connection between alumni and the UMF community—ensuring future generations have the support they need to succeed.
UMF Alumni Scholarships
The Standish Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) in 2020 with income generated from an endowment under the direction of Joal Savage. The fund shall be used to provide funding for full tuition, housing, and a meal plan for graduate study in a master’s program at the University of Maine. Applicants must:
• Provide proof of acceptance to a master’s program at the University of Maine, in the form of an official acceptance letter;
The income from this endowed scholarship fund shall be awarded annually to a Maine resident UMF student majoring in the Bachelor of Science Program in Community Health who has earned a minimum of 60 credits. The current recipient shall receive preference subject to continuance in the program.
The income from this fund shall be used for full tuition scholarships for students in need at the University of Maine at Farmington.
These scholarships are awarded to seniors at UMF who are Maine residents and who plan to teach early childhood education or home economics related subjects. Academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is majoring in education or counseling, who has financial need and who has at least a 3.0 G.P.A., or in the case of a first-year student, at least a “B” average in high school. Preference shall be given to a female student.
The fund for this award was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 1971 with gifts from family and friends. The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is teaching. Preference shall be given to students with financial need.
This scholarship was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2008 on behalf of the UMF Alumni Foundation with a bequest from the estate of Leta Wentworth, Class of 1937. The income from the fund shall be used annually to support one or more UMF students who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing, and who has financial need.
This scholarship is awarded to one, or not more than three, women students at UMF preparing to teach in Maine elementary schools. Preference is to be given to women who graduated from Somerset County, Maine, high schools.
This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Maine resident students, majoring in Elementary Education, who have taken at least 30 credits, are in good academic standing and have financial need. The recipient(s) of the scholarship may reapply in subsequent years.
Shall be awarded to a rising junior special education major at UMF who has demonstrated financial need as well as high academic achievement and strong interest in the development of students with special needs through work and/or volunteer experiences. The scholarship award may be continued for the recipient’s fourth year of studey at UMF provided that the recipient continues to demonstrate high academic achievement. In the event that there is no eligible special education major, an elementary or secondary education major who meets the stated criteria may be considered for this award.
Scholarships from this fund are awarded to Maine residents majoring in elementary or special education at UMF, based on high academic standing after completion of a successful semester.
This scholarship is awarded to up to four UMF students who graduated from Mt. Abram High School as located in Salem, ME. The recipient(s) shall have earned at least 15 credits and have financial need. Distribution from this fund shall be credited to each recipient’s account for tuition, board and room, student activity fees, books and other direct expenses incurred at UMF.
Are renewable scholarships made on the basis of meritorious academic work and/or financial need. Preference is given to residents of Wilton, Maine and secondly to residents of other locations in Franklin County, Maine.
This scholarship is awarded to a promising student majoring in Elementary Education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need.
This scholarship fund was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2003 with a bequest from the estate of Priscilla Noddin. The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to one or more UMF students who demonstrate financial need and high academic achievement.
Was established by the Univerisyt of Maine at Farmington (UMF) in 2018 with gifts from Barbara, Joseph, and Anna Toner, along with community members, family, and friends. The Scholarship honors James “Jim” Toner, the late director of the UMF’s Fitness and Recreatiion Center and Founder of the Un iversity’s Mainely Outdoors program. The income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to a UMF sophomore in good academis standing, who has demonstrated involvement in academic and/or co-curricular programming that emphasizes the importance or outdoor recreational opprotunities as well as programs related to physical fitness, municipal recreation, or sports management. Preference will be given to stufenta who demostrated participation and leadership in the University’s Mainely Outdoors Program and/or the UMF Fitness and recreation Center. Selection of the University’s Scholarship recipient shall be made by the University’s Scholarship Committee. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Chief Business Officer. Shoulf it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the fund as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donors’ intentions and wished shall be designated by the President of UMF at his or her sole discretion.
Are awarded on the basis of financial need to UMF students who are residents of Androscoggin, Franklin, Oxford or Somerset Counties, Maine.
This scholarship is awarded to one or more graduates of Gardiner Area High School who are in good academic standing and who demonstrates financial need.
Provides an award to students on the basis of meritorious academic work after completion of a successful semester and/or financial need.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a UMF student, or students, majoring in education. The recipient(s) shall have completed a minimum of 15 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has taken at least 30 credits, has a G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and has financial need. Preference shall be given to a student with a music minor.
Provides a scholarship of at least $1,000 to be awarded to a full-time student majoring in Elementary Education and entering his/her sophomore, junior or senior year, based upon academic achievement, demonstrated commitment to the field of elementary education, and leadership potential excluding athletic ability or participation.
Is to be awarded to two students in good academic standing (at least 3.0 G.P.A.).
Shall be awarded annually to one or more UMF students who is a Maine resident, is majoring in elementary education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing, and has financial need. Preference shall be given to residents of Washington County, Maine
Was established in memory of Flora Ella Deane Weeks at the University of Maine at Farmington in 1998 with a bequest from Olive Calpernia Weeks Coviello ’31. The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to one or more students majoring in art and who has financial need. The recipient(s) of the scholarship may reapply in subsequent years. The amount of the award(s) is not to exceed a recipients’ tuition with preference given to covering full tuition. If sufficient funds are available for more than one student, the balance shall be awarded as per the terms of the fund.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student who has taken at least 30 credit hours, who has a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, who is in need of financial assistance
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student from Maine majoring in education. The recipient shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students from SAD #47 who have graduated from Messalonskee High School.
This scholasrhip will be given to a current student with preference to one who plans to teach and who has financial need.
This scholarship is to be awarded to a student in good academic standing (at least 3.0 G.P.A.) and also in need of financial assistance.
This scholasrhip is awarded to a UMF student who has earned a minimum of 30 credit hours and has at least a 3.2 GPA.
Contributions to as well as the income from this fund shall be used annually to award a scholarship of up to $1,000 to a student with financial need, and who has overcome many personal and family challenges. Preference shall be given to an individual who has been in foster care.
This scholarship is awarded to a promising student majoring in Education, in good academic standing and having financial need.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and, foremost, who has financial need.
This scholarship was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2006 with gifts from Couser family and friends. The income from the fund shall be awarded to a UMF student majoring in math.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education, who has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours, and who has financial need.
Is awarded annually to a UMF student who has earned at least 30 credits, has financial need and who is involved with UMF theatre.
This scholarship is awarded to a woman who is currently a junior and a native of Maine, who is preparing for a teaching career. Academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student majoring in education, who is in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student majoring in education who has an excellent G.P.A. and, foremost, who has significant financial need. Preference shall be given to first generation college students.
This scholarship was established for the University of Maine at Farmington in 2007 through the Maine Community Foundation. The fund shall be used annually to support a second, third, or fourth year student pursuing a degree in education who is a graduate of Biddeford High School or resident of York County, should no eligible Biddeford High School graduate apply. Financial need is the priority eligibility criterion. The minimum annual award will be $1,000, and the size, number, and renewal of awards are at the discretion of the UMF Scholarship Committee within this guideline.
Provides scholarship awards for students at all UM campuses, with preference given to students from the Greater Portland area (Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Cape Elizabeth, and Scarborough).
This scholarship is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in elementary education with demonstrated interest in early childhood education. The recipient shall have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours, be in good academic standing, and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students from Piscataquis County.
The income from this fund is to be awarded annually to a Maine resident who has taken at least 30 credit hours at UMF, who also is in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance.
The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to a graduate from any Maine high school with preference given to graduates of Bucksport High School or Averill High School at Goodwill Hinckley. This scholarship is renewable subject to continued availability of funding and maintaining good academic standing.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a matriculated student in a Bachelor Degree program with a major in a business area. The recipient shall have a GPA of at least 2.5, have taken 30 credits and have financial need.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in elementary education who graduated from a Maine high school. The recipient shall have attained sophomore status, be in good academic standing with a grade point average of 2.5 or above, have financial need, and express a strong desire to teach.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need.
Is awarded to an elementary education student of meritorious scholarship who has displayed evidence of unusual concern for, and rapport with children of elementary school age and who is earning at least part of his/her expenses.
Provides a scholarship to a promising junior or senior majoring in Elementary Education, in good academic standing and having financial need.
Provides an award based on financial need, with preference given to residents of Rangeley, Maine.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington on behalf of the UMF Alumni Foundation in 1998 with a bequest from Richard S. and Geraldine Nelson (Class of 1954) Douglas. The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to a student from Maine who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and who has financial need.
Is awarded annually to a non-traditional UMF student with financial need.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student majoring in the Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Rehabilitation Services, who is a Maine resident, has demonstrated commitment to and extraordinary promise for a career of helping others, has taken at least 60 credits and has financial need.
Is made to a UMF junior or senior who is a native of Massachusetts and who has demonstrated the ability, character, and seriousness of purpose necessary to a successful teaching career.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a UMF student who is majoring in liberal arts, who has taken a minimum of 30 credit hours, has an academic GPA of at least 3.0, and who has financial need.
These scholarships are awarded to one junior and one senior student who are preparing to work with preschool children, families, the elderly, or in the fields of nutrition, health education, or family services. Preference to be given to students in early childhood education or nutrition. Recipients must be in good academic standing and exhibit financial need. Junior recipients may reapply as seniors and shall be given preference provided they have maintained good academic standing.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student from Maine majoring in elementary education. The recipient shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need.
This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more UMF students preferably from the New Portland-Kingfield, ME area.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student with a GPA of 3.0 or better and who, through the student’s response to a personal essay in the application process, demonstrates knowledge, fellowship and leadership, excluding athletic ability or participation. When all else is judged equal, preference to be given to academic standing rather than need.
This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more UMF students who are Maine residents, have completed a minimum of 24 credits, are in good academic standing, and have financial need.
This scholarship is awarded to UMF students who are Maine residents majoring in elementary education, who have attained junior or senior status, who are in good academic standing, and who have financial need. Preference to be given to a male candidate who is also a graduate of SAD 48 (Nokomis) or SAD 53 (Pittsfield).
Is awarded to an outstanding junior or senior English major (either in arts and sciences, or secondary education) who has been a student at UMF during both his/her freshman and sophomore years. To be based on academic achievement in the field of English. Recipients must be of good character, in good academic standing, and must have demonstrated high academic achievement in all English courses. Nominations may be made by English faculty who have had the student at least one course and/or by academic administrators, but the recipient will be selected by the Scholarship Committee based on review of the student’s academic records. No other factors such as financial need, extra-curricular activities or other scholarships/awards received, will be considered.
This scholarship is awarded to a UMF student, or students, majoring in education. The recipient(s) shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing, and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students born in the State of Maine and graduated from a public school of secondary education in the State of Maine.
The income from this fund is to be awarded annually to a Maine resident who has taken at least 30 credit hours at UMF, who also is in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance.
Provides a scholarship award to an elementary education student who is a Maine resident, who has attended UMF on a full-time basis for at least two years, who has completed all course work except for student teaching, and who is a traditional age student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; preference to be given to a student who also has a demonstrated financial need.
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student majoring in Health Education, who is entering his/her junior or senior year, has financial need, and has contributed to college and community life, excluding athletic ability or participation.

Is awarded to a deserving UMF student, with academic standing after completion of one semester being considered.
Is awarded annually to a UMF student who shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need.
Is awarded annually to a UMF student enrolled in the Program of Basic Studies (PBS) or to a former Upward Bound (UB) student, who is a Maine resident, has taken at least 30 credits and has financial need.
Is awarded to a UMF student who has earned 40 credits with a minimum accumulative G.P.A. of 3.0. The recipient will have made significant contributions to the UMF community in extracurricular activities.
Awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education who has earned a minimum of 30 credits. The recipient shall express an interest in becoming bilingual and/or in traveling internationally.
Is awarded to one or more UMF students from out-of-state who have completed a minimum of 30 credits. The award shall not exceed full tuition.
Shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is a Maine resident majoring in elementary education. Preference shall be given to a disabled person.
Is awarded to a UMF student majoring in elementary education, who has taken at least 30 credits and has financial need.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington on behalf of the UMF Alumni Foundation in 1998 with a bequest from Richard S. and Geraldine Nelson (Class of 1954) Douglas. The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to a student from Maine who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and who has financial need.
This scholarship is used to make an annual award to a UMF student majoring in education who is from Maine. The recipient shall have earned a minimum of 32 credits. Preference shall be given to female students.
Is awarded to a deserving student with financial need and good academic standing following completion of a successful semester
Is provided by the Farmington area Colonial Daughters Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. (DAR). The scholarship is to be awarded to an upperclassman (junior or senior) pursuing a degree in education. The student must be a resident of Franklin County or Northern Oxford County.
This scholarship is awarded to up to four UMF students who graduated from Mt. Abram High School as located in Salem, ME. The recipient(s) shall have earned at least 15 credits and have financial need. Distribution from this fund shall be credited to each recipient’s account for tuition, board and room, student activity fees, books, and other direct expenses incurred at UMF.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2009. Funds shall be used for scholarships for incoming or current students at the University of Maine at Farmington who have graduated from a high school located in Franklin County, Maine. Selection of recipients shall be made by the UMF Office of Admission.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2003 with a gift from Jeffrey McMullen-Nixon in memory of her mother. The fund shall be awarded annually to an international student from a third-world country, with preference to the country of South Africa or other African countries. The award shall be no more than the gift revenue each year and may be renewable up to five years as long as the recipient is making academic progress.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2010 with gifts from his fiancée and friends friends. The fund shall be used to make an annual award of up to five hundred dollars ($500) to a UMF student majoring in computer science. The student would have to demonstrate financial need. Preference shall be given to a non-traditional student.
Is to be awarded annually to an entering UMF freshman from Mount Abram High School. Criteria – high academic average and unusual interest/achievement in either history, literature, art, or music. Selection made by Mount Abram High School Principal.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2004 with a gift from her husband, James Meistrell (1971). The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to one or more students majoring in special education who graduated in the top ten percent of their high school class. This scholarship is renewable subject to continued availability of funding and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0. Selection of the recipient shall be made by UMF’s Admissions Dept. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Vice President for Administration. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the President of the University of Maine at Farmington.
Income from the fund shall be used annually to support a student majoring in elementary education and has financial need. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Vice President for Administration. Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2007 with a gift from Dr. Sherburne and children, Carrie Thurston and Stuart Sherburne. The income from the fund shall be used to make an annual award to a UMF student. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years subject to the recipient’s maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5. Selection of the recipient shall be made by UMF’s Admissions Dept. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Vice President for Administration.
Shall be used annually to assist in the payment of educational expenses for the selected recipient. The recipient shall exhibit a clear need for financial assistance, be matriculated as a full-time student, have a major or concentration in Business Economics and have attained accumulative GPA for 3.0 or better or in his/her senior year in high school. This scholarship is renewable subject to the recipient’s maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Office of Admission The fund shall be administered by UMF’s VP for Administration. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the President of UMF. Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2011 with a gift from the estate of Marion D. Allen. Half of the annual income from the fund shall be used annually to award scholarships to one or more students who have graduated from South Portland High School, and half to one or more students who have graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School. The recipients shall be undergraduates or enrolled in one of UMF’s masters’ programs. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Admission.
This scholarship was established in 2013 with a bequest from Florence Armstrong. The income from the fund shall be used annually to award a scholarship to one or more UMF students. Preference shall be given to female students. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Office of Admission.
These scholarships are awarded to one junior and one senior student who are preparing to work with preschool children, families, the elderly, or in the fields of nutrition, health education, or family services. Preference to be given to students in early childhood education or nutrition. Recipients must be in good academic standing and exhibit financial need. Upperclass students in the aforementioned progras who maintain academic honors may also apply, with preference given to sophomores.
Shall be used annually to support one or more students majoring in Business Economics. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Department of Admission.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2008. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarships for incoming or current students from Maine, selected on the basis of academic merit, leadership potential, commitment to community service, and financial need. Selection of recipients shall be made by the UMF Office of Admission. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Vice President of Administration.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2020 with gifts from Lalafofofo, Brannan and Laura Vaughan. The Fund shall be used for tuituin and fees for international students who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at UMF. Preference shall be given to African students, specifically those from Tanzia. Selection of the scholarship recipients shall be made by UMF’s Office of Admissions in consultation with the Office of Global Education and Office of Financial Aid. The Fund Shall be administered by UMF’s Chief Business Officer. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purpose of the funds as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donors intentions and wishes shall be designated by the President of UMF at his or her sole discredtion.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2011 as a designated fund held by the Maine Community Foundation. The fund shall be used annually to support a student in the Creative Writing program who has demonstrated a passion for creativity and great promise as a writer as evidenced by submitted samples; this student need not be a creative writing major. Preference shall be given to non-traditional students. Selection of the recipient shall be made by UMF’s faculty in the Creative Writing Program.
Is given to a junior student at UMF demonstrating excellence in communication arts in the field of English. Selection is made by the English Faculty.
Is awarded annually to one or more seniors of UMF majoring in special education with an accumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher who have been accepted into a graduate program leading to an advanced degree in the field of Exceptionalities, including but not limited to Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance, Learning Disabilities, Speech Pathology, and Gifted/Talented. Priority shall be given to prospective full-time graduate students with limited financial support who were non-traditional students during their undergraduate years.
This fund was established through a generous bequest from Elizabeth Sturtevant Gorvine ’41 in 1991 and is to be awarded to a UMF graduate who has been accepted into or is enrolled in a graduate program leading to an advanced degree in the field of home economics including, but not limited to, home economics education and/or administration; education, with a concentration in home economics; occupational and vocational education; nutrition and dietetics; child development and family relations; textiles, apparel, and design; housing and home management; consumer studies.
Applicants will be assessed according to the following criteria: professional goals; professional and/or life experiences that support the mission of home economics; recommendations by former professors or employers; evidence of strong communication skills. Priority will be given to full-time graduate students with limited financial support. Scholarships may be awarded on a renewable basis.
Is awarded annually to a UMF student(s) for the senior year of study in either an associate or baccalaureate program. The student must have demonstrated financial need, have attended UMF for at least one year, be in good academic standing, and not have earned a prior baccalaureate degree. Preference to students with evidence of leadership and service to others. Selection of recipients to be made by the UMF Financial Aid Office which shall administer the fund.
Shall be awarded annually to a graduate of a high school in Jay or Livermore Falls, Maine. The recipient shall have achieved high academic standing and have financial need. Preference shall be given to new, first-year, or in-coming transfer students who meet the above criteria.
Is awarded to a student who has attended UMF for at least two semesters with meritorious academic achievement and demonstrated service to the campus community by active participation in one or more organizations and activities (excluding athletic ability or participation); preferably a student entering his/her junior or senior year.
Is awarded to a meritorious student enrolled in education or making application to enroll in education at UMF with the intent of entering the teaching profession. Only students residing in School Administrative District #9 are eligible with preference, if necessary, to go to a student from New Sharon.
Is awarded to one or more deserving students who have been residents of Farmington, Maine for a significant period of time (normally not less than five years) prior to enrolling at UMF. Former recipients of this award in good academic standing may also apply.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2004 with a bequest from Frances Allen Black in memory of her sister, E. Irene Allen. The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to enrolled out of state students who have completed one year at the University , and who are in need of financial aid. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Financial Aid Office. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Vice President for Administration.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2010 through a bequest and gifts to her family. The income from the fund shall be used annually to fund scholarships to one or more UMF students. Selection of the recepient(s) shall be made by the UMF Office of Financial Aid. Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) in 2022 with gifts from the generosity of friends, family, colleagues and community members. The scholarship honors Ron Milliken, former UMF Director of Financial Aid, UMF alumnus 1975, and 47- year employee at UMF. The income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance for first-time baccalaureate students with financial need who are enrolling full-time at UMF in either the sophomore, junior or senior year of study and who have successfully completed at least one year of full-time study at UMF. Selection and renewability of the scholarship recipients shall be determined by the UMF Director of Financial Aid ( or a designated financial aid staff member). The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Chief Business Officer. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the fund as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donors’ intentions and wishes shall be designated by the President of UMF at his or her sole discretion.

Upon attaining the minimum endowment level of $25,000, the income from the fund shall be used to make annual awards to a UMF student with excellent grades who resides out-of-state. This award may be renewable pending the availability of funds, as well as the recipient maintaining academic merit and involvement with the campus. Preference shall be given to education majors.

Until 2056, a preference shall be given to the descendants of the Stephens and Averill families. It shall be the responsibility of the scholarship applicant to inform the University of Maine at Farmington Merrill Center/ Financial Aid Office of the relationship at the time of application. If no descendants apply, the scholarship shall be awarded to the University of Maine at Farmington students who demonstrate financial need. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion. The University of Maine at Farmington Merrill Center/Financial Aid Office shall make selection of the recipient(s). The University of Maine at Farmington Merrill Center/Financial Aid Office shall administer the income from the fund.

Are awarded to deserving and needy UMF undergraduate students of good citizenship who are graduates of SAD 63, comprising Amherst, Aurora, Plantation #33, Osborne Plantation, Eddington, Holden, and Clifton, and who are residents of the towns of Clifton, Holden, or Eddington. The Roger Grindle Award will celebrate Roger’s scholarship, teaching, love of research and true passion for Maine history. Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in fiscal year 2015 with contributions from the Rainville and Lange family, as well as their friends and colleagues. The fund shall be administered by UMF’s Executive Director for Finance and Administration. A portion of the income of the fund shall be disbursed annually to award a scholarship or scholarships to a student or students majoring in Mathematics or a Mathematics related degree program which is representative of Russell Rainville’s passion for high-level Mathematics and teaching, such as Secondary Education Mathematics or Computer Science. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Mathematics and Computer Science Division faculty. A primary factor in selection is that the student(s) chosen will have demonstrated that they in some way best exemplify Russell Rainville’s love of and joy in the beauty of mathematics. Recipients of this award must spend this scholarship money on their education at the University of Maine at Farmington. Ideal candidates will be sophomore and junior students that have at least an overall 3.0 GPA.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 1996 with a gift from Peter Mills. The income from the fund shall be used to support student internships for UMF students studying science topics that advance the understanding of biology or related aspects of human life. The income from the fund shall be used to pay a stipend to the student or to the institution providing the internship or both. The award shall be made every two years to a student enrolled in an internship during a summer or fall or spring semester or May term and who has been selected by the science faculty. The first preference will be to a student interning.at the Jackson Labs in Bar Harbor, Maine.
If no award is made during a three year period, then in the fourth year the science faculty will select at least one deserving science student who has completed their junior year to receive the previously unused funds as a scholarship award.
If the sciences cease to be taught, then the fund will be used to fund interns in other fields of study offered by UMF. Should the funding of interns no longer be a necessity the funds shall be used for a scholarship in the Mills name.
Was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2017 with gifts from Kim Fast and Robert Fast Jr., in memory of Professor Emeritus of Psychology Robert Fast, Kim’s husband and Robert Jr.’s father.
The income from the fund shall be awarded annually to a UMF sophomore majoring in psychology, on the basis of sound academic performance and financial need. Selection of the scholarship recipient shall be made by a committee composed of the faculty of the Psychology Department in consultation with the Office of Student Aid.
Was established at the University Maine at Farmington in 2015 through the lead generosity and intent of Dr. Lorraine Spenciner, as well as through contributions from her family, former colleagues and friends to advance solutions to the severe and ever-present need for a qualified early at childhood special education and special education, teachers alike in birth through grade 12 educational settings.The income from this fund shall be used to award scholarships to needy individuals on their career pathways in early childhood special education, and/or special education through UMF by providing assistance for these individuals with the cost of coursework, and the appropriate state licensure exam fees. Student/educator recipients will be selected based upon exemplifying Dr. Spenciner’s love for and commitment to the fields of early childhood special education and special education, and to UMF. In case all other qualifications are deemed equal, preference will be given to an individual who has demonstrated his/her commitment to working with children, birth through grade 12, with special needs and their families. Final selection of the recipients shall be made by program, faculty and administrators in the UMF special education, alternate route to certification(SPARC), as well as by program faculty in early childhood special education and special education (and/or by the successor administrative units) in consultation with the financial aid office. The funds shall be administered by UMF’s Chief Business Officer (or his/her successor position).

Is awarded annually to a UMF student who has demonstrated a passion for leadership and the qualities of a leader in any one of the numerous clubs or organizations that are funded by the Student Activity Fee. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Student Senate Advisor in consultation with the student Senate Scholarship Committee. The applicants will be required to submit an essay answering the question, “What are the qualities of a responsible leader?”
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is a graduate of a Maine high school in the upper 50% of his/her graduating class and in good academic standing at UMF. Students of Italian descent are encouraged to apply.
