At UMF, the outdoors isn’t just nearby—it’s part of your everyday life.

If you love the outdoors, Farmington is the perfect place to call home during your college years. From some of Maine and New England’s best skiing and snowboarding to some seriously awesome hiking, mountain biking, camping, rafting, canoeing, and kayaking in the Northeast, adventure is always within reach. Right off campus, you’ll find miles of running and biking trails, geocaching spots, groomed Nordic skiing paths, and even night skiing at Titcomb Mountain just across town. With so many great options, it’s no wonder that we have great Outdoor Recreation Business Administration and Alpine Operations programs.

Need some experience and gear? We’ve got you covered! Mainely Outdoors, offers everything for students from free trips and excursions to free gear rentals, lessons, and training—helping everyone take full advantage of Farmington’s amazing outdoor setting.

Hiking

University of Maine at Farmington offers easy access to some of Maine’s best hiking, from quick walks to full weekend adventures.

  • Right from campus: Sandy River trails, Bonney Woods & Flint Woods, and the Whistle Stop Trail—perfect for quick walks or runs.
  • Within 30 minutes: Belgrade Lakes region and Mount Blue State Park for scenic lake and forest hikes.
  • Within an hour: Tumbledown Mountain, Rangeley Lakes, Bigelow Mountains, the Appalachian Trail, plus Grafton Notch State Park and Bethel trails with waterfalls and rugged terrain.
  • Weekend trips (2–3 hours): Maine’s coast, Acadia National Park, Katahdin, or New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Whether you’re heading out between classes or planning a weekend trip, there’s a trail for every pace and experience level.

Winter Recreation

Winter puts snow sports right at your doorstep—and at UMF, it comes with a major perk. Just 10 minutes from campus, Farmington’s Titcomb mountain offers downhill, Nordic, and night skiing to all full-time students ski and ride for FREE. You can also take free learn-to-ski and snowboard lessons—taught by fellow UMF students in the Alpine Operations program. There’s also loads of great snowshoeing, sledding, and ice-skating in Farmington.

On the Water

For those who love the water, Farmington has plenty to offer. The Sandy River flows right beside our athletic fields—perfect for swimming, paddling, or fly fishing. Just 10 minutes away, Wilson Lake in Wilton is a great spot for fishing, boating, and paddle sports.

Within a half hour, the scenic Belgrade Lakes region offers beautiful lakes ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. About an hour away, the Rangeley Lakes and Flagstaff Lake sit under the dramatic mountains of Western Maine, providing incredible views and ample water adventures.

Remember, students can rent kayaks, canoes, and other watercraft for FREE through Mainely Outdoors!

Biking

Farmington offers great biking right from campus. The Whistle Stop Trail provides an easy, scenic route for casual rides, while the nearby Titcomb Mountain mountain bike trails offer more local mountain biking options.

For dedicated mountain bikers, the Carrabassett Valley trail network features over 80 miles of trails trails of varying difficulty including lift service. Saddleback Bike Park in the Rangeley area is another great regional option.
