The Farmington Area

Adventure, Culture, & Nature

Farmington is nestled at the foothills of the mountains in western Maine — a safe, laid-back place where skiers and riders hang with artists and writers.

Life at University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) extends far beyond campus. Located in the heart of downtown Farmington and Maine’s lakes and mountains region, students enjoy a lifestyle defined by outdoor adventure, creative energy, and an exceptional quality of life. With no gates or walls separating campus from town, Farmington becomes part of your everyday experience. It’s the perfect balance place to live, learn, and explore.

Step off campus and you’re just minutes from local restaurants, coffee shops, the historic movie theater, and unique local stores. Want to take a quiet walk downtown at night for dinner and a movie? Go out for some Italian? Mexican? A pizza? A veggie wrap? Hot fudge sundae? Amazing soup? Reny’s department store? A large mochaccino and a ginormous breakfast bagel? Everything is within easy walking distance—making downtown Farmington feel like a natural extension of campus life.

Get Your Outdoors On

Students at UMF take full advantage of easy access to the outdoors, with places like Titcomb Mountain, the Whistle Stop Trail, and the Sandy River just minutes away. Whether you’re skiing, hiking, biking, or paddling, adventure is part of everyday life. Through Mainely Outdoors, you can borrow gear, join guided trips, and learn new skills in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment making it easy to try something new and explore year-round.

Full-time students also receive a FREE season pass to Titcomb Mountain, located just 10 minutes from campus. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, and trail running, plus free ski and ride lessons if you’re new to the sport. It’s all part of the UMF experience.

We Heart Art

UMF and the local community actively support a wide range of artistic expression—music, theater, visual arts, poetry, film, improv, and more. The university regularly hosts performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians, dance companies, and comedians; exhibitions by notable artists; and readings by Pulitzer Prize-winning poets and celebrated authors.

From thought-provoking plays and musicals to spontaneous student performances and gallery openings, there’s always something artistic happening—and it’s always welcomed with enthusiasm by both students and residents alike.

Maine is known for its Quality of Life!

Maine is the largest state in New England, with 6,000 lakes, 3,500 miles of coastline, and 17 million acres of forest, including extensive state and national parks. Farmington is just 40 minutes from the state capital, Augusta, and 90 minutes from Portland, Maine’s largest city.

Maine’s state bird is the chickadee (not the blackfly, despite the jokes), and its motto is Dirigo—“I Lead.” With license plates that proudly read “Vacationland,” Maine is more than a place to study—it’s a place to thrive.

Right in the Middle of Ski Country!

Farmington is located in beautiful Franklin County, which stretches from the Quebec border to central Maine. Our part of Maine is called “the western mountains,” “the lakes & mountains region,” “Maine’s High Peaks” or “ski country.” It looks like an L.L. Bean commercial here.

Western Maine is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering abundant wildlife like moose, deer, bald eagles, trout, and yes, even beavers (our school mascot!). It’s a destination for adventurers from around the world—and of course, a fantastic place to live and study.
