Voices of UMF: Erika Bickford
“The University of Maine at Farmington has empowered me to deepen my knowledge, strengthen my leadership skills, and further my commitment to ensuring all students feel a sense of belonging and access to meaningful educational opportunities.”
Erika Bickford, a kindergarten teacher and 2026 graduate of UMF’s M.S.Ed. in Special Education program, is passionate about creating inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive. Nominated by her professors as a student of note, she recently reflected on her journey at UMF and the impact the program has had on her professional growth.
“While working as a special education teacher in a behavioral and functional life skills classroom, I worked with many students who spent more time in special education settings than in their general education classrooms. These students challenged me to become a stronger educator and deepened my understanding of how students with disabilities can be successful in general education environments when the appropriate supports are in place. This experience strengthened my belief that all students deserve a sense of belonging and that, as educators, we must presume competence and create opportunities for every student to succeed. These experiences ultimately influenced my decision to pursue my education at UMF, where I knew I could continue to grow as an educator and advocate for inclusive practices.
Through coursework, reflection, and action research, I strengthened my understanding of inclusive practices and deepened my commitment to ensuring all students, including those with significant needs, have access to meaningful opportunities in general education settings. I am especially proud of my work advocating for increased access and participation for students with disabilities, collaborating with colleagues to improve inclusive practices, and sharing strategies to support student success. Additionally, balancing graduate studies while working in educational leadership allowed me to grow in confidence, strengthen my leadership skills, and apply my learning directly to improving outcomes for students and staff.
What stands out to me most about UMF is its knowledgeable and passionate faculty, who demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting student growth and success. Additionally, the combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning has been especially valuable to me. The flexibility of self-paced coursework, paired with live learning opportunities through Zoom meetings, has allowed me to balance professional responsibilities while remaining engaged in meaningful discussions and collaborative learning experiences.
I would encourage a prospective student to fully engage in the experience, trust the process, and be open to growth. UMF provides flexibility and support, but the more you invest, the more meaningful your experience will be. Don’t underestimate your ability to grow—UMF will challenge you in ways that strengthen both your confidence and professional practice.”
