Pre-Departure and Arrival Information

Important Information to Know before you Go!

Entering the United States

Entering the United States as an international student requires careful preparation to meet U.S. immigration requirements. This includes obtaining the appropriate visa (F-1 or J-1), ensuring all travel documents such as your passport, I-20 or DS-2019 are valid, and understanding entry procedures at U.S. ports of entry. Students should also be aware of customs regulations, required health and vaccination documentation, and recommended steps for a smooth transition to campus life at UMF. Proper planning helps ensure compliance with U.S. immigration laws and a successful start to your studies.

Packing & Luggage Tips for International Students

When traveling to UMF, keep all important documents—passport, I-20/DS-2019—in your carry-on and include the UMF office address and phone number on your luggage in case it’s delayed. Pack lightly and bring only essentials, including warm clothing for spring arrivals and adapters for electronics. Small personal items and pictures can help make your new residence feel like home. UMF offers scheduled shopping trips during Orientation to purchase necessities. Remember, money over $10,000 or valuable items must be declared upon entry, and certain items may require registration with your home country before departure.

Finances for International Students at UMF

International students should have U.S. currency for their first few days in Maine and ensure they have enough funds to cover all personal and family expenses while at UMF. Currency can be exchanged before travel or at major U.S. airports, while local bank exchanges may take 2–4 weeks. Students can set up a payment plan with the Student Accounts Office if tuition or fees haven’t been paid in advance, and a local bank account can be opened during the first week. Be prepared to cover necessary expenses for at least the first month.

Residence Halls and Dining Plans at UMF

Residence hall contracts begin at move-in, and students must provide their own bedding and towels, which can also be purchased locally for $60–$80. Beds require Twin XL sheets and comforters. Students arriving early or with guests should plan to stay at a local hotel or motel. Dining services and meal plans officially begin after orientation, ensuring students have access to meals as they settle into campus life.
