Study Abroad

Study Abroad / Study Away

UMF offers a window to the wider world beyond Farmington. While here, explore the possibility of studying internationally or elsewhere within the US for up to a year. Many Away/Abroad programs can help you complete your general education and/or major requirements. Where will you go?

Study Abroad Providers

Most students who choose to study abroad do so through a study abroad provider. When studying with a provider, you will pay a program fee, rather than your normal UMF tuition. Providers offer programs all around the world and usually come with a number of benefits like help applying for student visas and special insurance coverage. If you are considering studying abroad, look through each of the following UMF approved providers and find the program you feel is the best fit for you!

Other Study Abroad options

Direct Exchange Programs

UMF offers direct exchange programs with two international universities. Unlike studying abroad with a provider, on a direct exchange, you will pay your normal UMF tuition plus additional costs associated with travel. For many students, direct exchange is one of the most affordable ways to study abroad!

National Student Exchange

The National Student Exchange is for students wishing to undertake short term study at another university in the United States. While UMF is not currently a NSE member, we can arrange a Guest Student Exchange on your behalf!

Study Abroad Scholarships & Financial Aid

It’s true that studying abroad can be expensive – luckily UMF has years of experience guiding students through how to secure scholarships and apply financial aid to their study abroad experiences! Whether it’s learning how to use your veterans benefits or finding the right scholarship, we’ll help you make it possible to get where you want to go!

UMF Scholarships

These scholarships are funded and administered by UMF exclusively for UMF students. Contact the Office of Global Education (jeffrey.willis@maine.edu) for more information about how to apply.

UMF Global Education Fund

The GEF is a special fund built by UMF specifically to support students who want to have a global experience during their time here. Whether you’re planning on studying abroad, taking a travel course, undertaking an internship, or doing some other form of travel, if you’re a UMF student you will have the opportunity to apply for funding from the GEF!

UMF Gwilym Roberts Travel Scholarship

The Gwilym Roberts Travel Scholarship is awarded to students who have been accepted into a study abroad program, exhibit financial need and have a strong academic record. Created in honor of beloved professor Gwilym Roberts, this scholarship supports meaningful, immersive experiences that deepen cultural understanding and personal growth.

UMF Mark Bartholomew Scholarship

The Mark Bartholomew Scholarship supports UMF students in travel courses or study abroad programs by helping cover costs like airfare, lodging, and program fees. Open to all majors, it honors Dr. Bartholomew’s legacy by making global learning more accessible and encouraging students to expand their horizons through real-world experiences.

External Scholarships

This is a selection of external scholarships that are available to UMF students and others around the United States. The list is not exhaustive, and you may find other scholarships or opportunities that the Office of Global Education can help you pursue! Many study abroad providers also have their own scholarship opportunities.
