Stack Your Certificate Into a Master’s Degree

Many UMF graduate certificates can be applied toward a related master’s degree, allowing you to build on the work you have already completed. If you decide to continue your studies, courses taken for a certificate may count toward degree requirements, helping you save time and maximize your investment.

Whether you are looking to develop specialized skills, advance in your career, or explore a new area of interest, starting with a graduate certificate can be a flexible way to begin your graduate education and create a pathway toward a future degree.

Nature-Based Learning in Action

Graduate students in Building Bridges in Nature-Based Education course engaged in a field-based learning experience at Hidden Valley Nature Center, applying course concepts in a real outdoor setting. Using bog, forest, and pond ecosystems as their classroom, students engaged in the work of scientists, artists, and writers while making connections to their own teaching contexts and the students they serve.

The day included observing macroinvertebrates, discovering a bullfrog tadpole, and reflecting on risk and hazard in outdoor learning environments. This elective course was created by UMF Professor Kathryn Will and Becky Hallowell, former UMF Alumna and Maine’s 2025 Teacher of the Year, to support educators in thinking about how they can build opportunities for nature-based education in their own schools and address barriers to implementation.
