Real Help, Real Money

At UMF, we believe cost shouldn’t stand in the way of your education. That’s why nearly all full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking students receive some form of financial aid. From merit scholarships and grants to student loans, work-study jobs, and special UMF or private scholarships, we offer a wide range of options to help you afford your college journey.

You don’t have to go looking for it on your own—financial aid info is automatically sent to all applicants, so you’ll know what support you qualify for right from the start. Our team is here to help you combine different types of aid into a package that works for you. With UMF’s effective and flexible financial aid, your future is closer (and more affordable) than you think.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

    • You must enter the University of Maine at Farmington’s federal school code, 002040 on your FAFSA.

    • Note: Prior to filing the FAFSA online, you and your parent must create a FSA ID at FAFSA.gov, which will be used to sign the FAFSA and gives you access to Federal Student Aid’s online systems.

    • There is no downside to filing as early as possible. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to maximize your financial aid eligibility.

    • Priority for financial aid packaging at UMF will be given to those whose completed FAFSA is received at the federal processor by March 1

Special Circumstances

Students who believe they have special circumstances that may affect their financial aid eligibility should notify the UMF Financial Aid Office in writing. To begin the process, the student or parent must request and complete the Explanation of Special Circumstances form, available from the Financial Aid Office.

Examples of special circumstances include unemployment, divorce, loss of non-taxable income, disability, death of a parent or spouse, or significant medical expenses. Supporting documentation is usually required, and submitting an appeal does not guarantee additional aid will be awarded.

Unusual Circumstances

Students who do not meet the federal definition of an independent student but believe they have unusual circumstances may appeal to the UMF Financial Aid Office to request a review of their dependency status.

Unusual circumstances must involve situations where it would be inappropriate to require parental information—such as cases of abuse, parental incarceration, or the student being unable to locate or contact their parents. Financial independence alone is not sufficient to justify a change in dependency status. Situations like not living with parents, lack of financial support, or parents refusing to complete the FAFSA do not qualify on their own.

Students who believe they qualify should contact the Financial Aid Office. Appeals require supporting documentation, and all decisions are made at the discretion of the Financial Aid Office.
