The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) Middle & Secondary Education program prepares you to teach students in grades 6–12 and launch a meaningful career in middle and high school classrooms. Recognized as one of New England’s premier teacher education programs, UMF combines a strong liberal arts foundation in the subjects you’ll teach, extensive hands-on experience in real-world classrooms, and instruction from full-time faculty dedicated to teacher preparation—ensuring you develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive in today’s schools.

The Learning Experience

UMF’s Middle & Secondary Education program pairs students with expert faculty and off-site supervisors to gain hands-on experience in teaching. Students also attend regional and statewide education conferences, presenting their work and networking with education leaders.

To help you sharpen your focus and skills in a particular teaching area, you may choose from five different Middle & Secondary Education concentrations.

What can I do with a degree in Middle & Secondary Education?

With a degree in Middle & Secondary Education from UMF, you can pursue careers such as:

  • Middle School Teacher (grades 6–8)

  • High School Teacher (grades 9–12)

  • Curriculum Specialist or Instructional Coordinator
