Roll Up Your Sleeves and Get Involved With the Skills Employers Want To See

At UMF, you can study areas like network security, AI, web development, and more, gaining skills in the latest technologies employers seek. Courses in topics such as computer architecture, databases, networking, programming, algorithms, and graphics prepare you for independent projects, internships, and on-campus jobs that put your learning into action.

The Learning Experience

Students gain hands-on experience through labs, research, and real-world campus roles while building strong technical and problem-solving skills. Students apply what they learn through:

  • Programming and software development
  • Data structures and algorithm design
  • Networking and computer security
  • Database systems and data management
  • Machine learning and emerging technologies
  • Web development and computer graphics
  • Independent study, internships, and on-campus tech jobs (labs, IT Help Desk, campus offices)
  • Competitive programming, including UMF’s annual contest (top 15 finishes among 40+ schools)

With close faculty mentorship in a small program setting, students build both technical depth and independent thinking skills preparing graduates for a wide range of careers.

Internships – Real-World Experience

Graduates are prepared for careers in software development, cybersecurity, data management, networking, web development, and continued study in graduate programs. Students gain hands-on experience through internships and applied learning opportunities with regional employers. Recent internships:

Interested in a minor?

The Computer Science minor provides students with a foundation in programming, data structures, and core computational thinking, while offering flexibility to explore a range of advanced computing topics. Students develop practical problem-solving and analytical skills that support software development and data-driven applications.

Complementary minors for Computer Science majors include Data Analytics, Mathematics, Video Game Studies, and Business.
