Earning College Credit with the International Baccalaureate (IB) at UMF

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is a globally recognized, rigorous pre-college program designed for high-achieving, motivated students. It emphasizes intellectual, social, and critical thinking skills across diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) awards academic credit for IB Higher Level exams with scores of 5 or above. Credit is granted based on departmental evaluation, ranging from 3 to 8 credits per exam. Interested students are encouraged to contact UMF’s Office of Admission for further details or to arrange a visit.

Merit-Based Scholarships for International Students at UMF

The University of Maine at Farmington offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships for outstanding incoming international first-year undergraduate students. The scholarship provides $11,000 per year, distributed as $5,500 per semester for up to four years, totaling $44,000. Canadian students, who qualify for in-state tuition, are also eligible for merit scholarships at the in-state level. Scholarships are awarded based on factors such as academic achievement, special non-athletic talents, ethnicity, and geographic origin. To remain eligible, students must maintain F-1 visa status and live on campus. While this scholarship helps reduce tuition costs, international students must still cover additional expenses themselves. On-campus employment is allowed up to 20 hours per week, though job availability is not guaranteed.

Health, Housing, and Transportation Information for International Students

All students born after 1956 must provide proof of immunization for measles, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria before completing registration. Health insurance is mandatory for both F-1 and J-1 students, and the university provides access to required coverage. On-campus housing is guaranteed if housing applications are submitted by the deadline. While Farmington lacks public transportation, the university offers shuttle services to the Augusta Concord Coach Lines station during key academic calendar dates and to local shopping areas weekly. From Augusta, students can connect to Portland and Boston for broader travel, though students should plan independently for transportation needs beyond these services.

Understanding the I-94 Record and SEVIS Transfer Guidelines

The I-94 Arrival/Departure Record is a critical document that serves as proof of legal visitor status in the U.S. and provides a limited history of travel in and out of the country. It can be retrieved and printed from the official I-94 website. Students in F-1 or J-1 status may request a SEVIS transfer to another institution if they meet specific eligibility criteria. F-1 students must submit their transfer request within the 60-day grace period following program completion, while J-1 students must do so within a 30-day grace period and cannot have gaps between program sponsorship. In both cases, students must ensure the timely start of their new academic program and possess a new I-20 or DS-2019 to re-enter the U.S. after traveling abroad.

SEVIS Transfer Procedures for Incoming and Outgoing UMF Students

For students transferring to the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF), the SEVIS transfer-in process can begin after receiving an admission letter. Students must notify their current institution, provide necessary documents (e.g., acceptance letter, visa, current I-20/DS-2019), and report for UMF’s mandatory international orientation. The final transfer step includes issuing a “Transfer Complete” I-20 or DS-2019. For transferring out of UMF, students must submit their new school’s admission letter and SEVIS code, and specify their desired SEVIS transfer date. Once processed and the release date passes, the new institution can access the student’s SEVIS record and issue the appropriate transfer documentation.
