A 2026-2027 “Military-Friendly School” – Small Public Colleges

The University of Maine at Farmington was awarded the Military Friendly Schools Gold award (the organization’s highest award) from MilitaryFriendly.com for its efforts in creating sustainable and meaningful education paths for the Military Community.

The Military Friendly ratings are determined through an evaluation of public data and proprietary data gathered through the annual Military Friendly survey process. The data-driven survey topics and questions are reviewed and developed with the assistance of an independent Military Friendly Advisory Council comprising independent subject matter experts and industry partners representing the field of veteran education.

Dependents of Veterans

Veterans who are eligible to receive Chapter 30 or 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill®, or Dependent beneficiaries using Post 9/11 GI Bill®, and recipients of Chapter 35, Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program, will be charged in-state tuition rates for terms starting after the Spring 2015 semester. Once the in-state tuition rate is applied to the eligible individual, it shall remain in effect until the student completes their academic program, even after GI Bill® benefits have been exhausted, transferred, or otherwise expired.

Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefits would need to be transferred to the dependent, and the dependent must begin college courses within three years after the veteran’s discharge from active duty to receive In-state tuition.

Dependents of Active Duty Military Members

Members of the armed forces, and their dependents, including a spouse or domestic partner, will be granted in-state tuition during such periods of time as they are stationed on active duty within the State of Maine, or if their Military State of residency is Maine. Documentation needed to support Military State of residency would be a copy of the military members’ Leave and Earnings Statement (LES).  Individuals who have been granted in-state tuition under these conditions, but then cease from active duty would continue to be granted in-state tuition. Students seeking in-state tuition based on a domestic partnership relationship must submit an approved Affidavit of Domestic Partnership.

What would I say to a fellow military veteran considering UMF? That I felt accepted by others here — peers, professors, and staff. They ensured a smooth transition and accepted me as a non-traditional student. They also helped me reach my goals and to fulfill my educational needs. I love that UMF is continuing to further veteran recognition and working toward building a veteran community on campus.

Priority Registration and Military Activation Support for Veterans

Veterans at UMF receive priority registration each semester, allowing them to enroll in courses before the general student population. This benefit is available as long as there are no holds on the student’s account, such as past-due balances, library fines, or financial responsibility holds. Priority registration helps veterans plan their schedules and secure needed courses to support timely progress toward their degree.

In the event of military activation, students called to active duty should submit official Military Orders to the School Certifying Official within 30 days. UMF is committed to minimizing the impact of activation on a student’s academic career and will work to accommodate any disruptions to coursework or enrollment to support continued educational success.

Veteran Responsibilities and Certification Requirements

Veterans at UMF are responsible for keeping the Veterans Administration (VA) informed about their educational program. This includes completing a Veteran Request for Certification before each semester and submitting it to the UMF Certifying Official. Students must also promptly report any changes to their schedule, withdrawal from the university, change of major, or change of address.

It is important to note that the VA generally does not pay for courses a student does not attend (“L” grades), courses from which a student withdraws, or courses completed with grades that do not count toward graduation. Staying up-to-date with certification and reporting requirements ensures continued VA educational benefits.
